Glenburnie Livestock Report 1/5/19

The first market back after the very long Easter/Anzac break saw the better quality cattle suiting both the trade and feedlots.  What was surprising was that only 828 were yarded after the two week break, a reflection of the lack of numbers about.  A large percentage of the yarding suited feedlotters and restockers, forcing export and trade buyers to compete strongly on suitable cattle.

BULLS:  Sold at 9am

HEAVY STEERS & BULLOCKS:   Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Andrew Whan and Scott Miller

The better heavy steers and bullocks sold at dearer rates this week, but they were harder to find in a plainer quality yarding.  More plainer steers of both beef and dairy breeds came forward showing the effects of the drier autumn.  The better heavy steers and bullocks to process made 280c to 310c per kg.  Heavy steers 470kg to 520kg to feedlots 272c to 295c per kg.  Manufacturing types 220c to 250c per kg.  Dairy steers 178c to 205c per kg.

Quotations: Heavy Ang bullocks A/c Nacooma Est 292c 780kg $2279.  Frs steers A/c Lotsmore 193c 533kg $1028 and Illawarra steers same A/c 201c 561kg $1128 and 195c 531kg $1037.

YOUNG CATTLE:   Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Peter Creek and Liam Durcan

The lack of quality forced trade buyers to compete strongly on suitable cattle.  The best trade quality steers 280c to 295c per kg while heifers made 255c to 292c per kg or 5 to 15c per kg dearer.  Feedlots were active, as a large proportion of the yarding suited their specifications.  There were many lighter, plainer cattle suiting restockers.

Quotations:  A/c KJ & MJ Mountford prime Ang x heifers off irrigation topped the MWJ run at 286c 422kg $1028.  RD & JM Mickel’s empty MG x heifers 275c 422kg $1160 and Her heifers account the same vendor 278c 420kg $1167 and 272c 394kg $1072.  PA & JA Johnson’s Her Sim x calves sold well – the steers 293c 337kg $988 and heifers 278c 336kg $936.

COWS:   Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Liam Durcan and Andrew Whan

A very small run of cows, that sold to much stronger demand than prior to Easter being 10 to 20c per kg dearer.  Heavy beef cows 190c to 220c per kg.  Light beef cows 160c to 188c per kg.

Quotations:  Heavy cross bred cows A/c Fourwinds 200c 649kg $1298.  Ang x cows A/c Ansta Park 206c 624kg $1285 and Ang x cows A/c C Damhuis 216c 636kg $1373.

SHEEP AND LAMBS:   Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Scott Miller and Liam Durcan

930 sheep and lambs sold, 200 less than last market.  A better quality yarding of shorn trade and export lambs.  The buyers gallery was more enthusiastic with one major exporter operating strongly.  This healthy competition pushed rounded lambs up by $8 to $10.  Best export lambs from 24kg to 26kg from $176 to $200.  There was also strong competition in the trade lambs for 20kg to 22kg at $138 to $156 being $4 to $5 dearer.  16 to 18kg light trade lambs were very few in numbers, but these small numbers sold at $125 to $137.  There was no restocker activity, smaller and lighter lambs sold from $55 to $80.

Drier conditions lead to a much larger than advertised yarding of 2178 Cattle. The major feedlots need for cattle with weight to put straight onto feed which created varying price trends. The steers over 350kg LWT sold to stronger demand than last month at 280 to 325c per kg or $990 to $1200. Steers under these weights appear good buying if purchasers were prepared to punt on opening rains $650-$900. The heifers matched the steer results with heavy heifers going to grain finishes $780 to $920 with other heifers $550 to $700 and small heifers $400 to $520. A very plain run of cows and calves made $1100 to $1550.
