Glenburnie Market Report 06/03/2019

Cooler conditions with a sprinkling of rain was welcomed by all after last week’s heat wave. Numbers eased by over 200 with 1000 cattle coming forward this week. Every week quality is very mixed with the gap widening between the better types and the plainer types, resulting in mixed price trends.

BULLS:  Sold at 9am.

Bulls sold to firm demand with heavy sound bulls making from 180-224c per kg.

HEAVY STEERS & BULLOCKS:   Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Andrew Whan and Scott Miller.

A very mixed run of heavy steers and bullocks this week, without the very top end quality of last week. Some very mixed results, with some sales very firm on last week but the off type steers (which there were more) selling at much cheaper rates. Best quality heavy steers and bullocks 260-278c per kg, secondary types 230-255c per kg, Friesian steers 168-195c per kg.

Quotations: The weight of the best bullocks was a feature in the MWJ run. RE Browns 16 Ang x Ox topped the market at 275c 711kg $1956.00. Prime Her Sim X Ox A/c KJ & MJ Mountford off irrigation 272c 708kg $1925.00. A/c Reg Edwards & Son Ang Ox 262c 701kg $1836.00. and Her Ox A/c RE Brown 264c 668kg $1765.00. Heavy steers A/c T Kitschke 273c 507kg $1385.00 and fresh Friesian Steers A/c A & A Taylor 195c 533kg $1039.00.

YOUNG CATTLE:   Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Andrew Whan and Liam Durcan.

Quality was harder to find in the young cattle this week, with many more off bred types coming forward. Trade buyers were keen for cattle with good fat cover and yield. This saw the better heifers fully firm to dearer, while the trade steers lacked last weeks quality and suited feedlots or re-stockers. Heavy heifers over 500kg 222-265c per kg, trade heifers 238-273c per kg, yearling steers 248-295c per kg. A few more vealers were yarded this week with steers up to 275c per kg and heifers 270c per kg.

Quotations:  The grass yearling heifers sold to stronger demand in the MWJ run. Anthony Wilson’s MG Heifers 265c 492kg $1308.00. A/c Sim & Holland’s Ang x Heifers 256c 450kg $1154.00. Prime yearlings off irrigation A/c JF & JL Kitschke saw heifers 273c 425kg $1160.00. and Ang x Steers 295c 428kg $1263.00.

COWS:   Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Liam Durcan and Scott Miller.

A smaller run of cows sold at similar rates to last week with the better medium and heavy beef cows 182-200c per kg. Light beef cows made 145-180c per kg.

Quotations:  All classes were yarded in the MWJ run. Fat Jersey Cows A/c SM & ADJ Hinton 142c 443kg $629.00. Char Cows A/c GC & RIK Reichelt 188c 655kg $1231.00. One prime Red Angus Cow A/c C Damhuis 200c 740kg $1480.00. A run of Ang Cows A/c Hillside saw 11 at 195c and 21 at 191c to a top of $1345.00.

SHEEP AND LAMBS:   Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Scott Miller and Liam Durcan.

1,273 sheep and lambs sold, similar to last week’s yarding with another mixed yarding. The smaller buyers gallery mixed in with a very strong restocking order provided healthy competition. One exporter wasn’t operating but the best export lambs from 26kg plus sold to $188. 24 to 26kg lambs were $155 to $168. Medium trade lambs received a boost with a restocker operating on the top end of lambs. 20 to 22kg lambs from $135 to $144. Lighter lambs 18 to 20kg saw wholesalers and restocker competition from $118 to $130. Even lighter lambs 12 to 16kg were from $95 to $112.

Quotations:  A/c Earlside 225 shorn lambs from $124 to $145. A/c A. Day 11 lambs $146. A/c GC & RIK Reichelt 18 lambs $144.
