Glenburnie Market Report 13/03/2019

A dramatic drop in numbers due to Labour Day public holiday and cheaper trends as drought numbers in the North cause big price corrections for plain steers and heifers. The usual field of buyers operated in small mixed yarding of 410 cattle. Prices remained solid on only the best prime cattle with inferior plain cattle easing 20c per kg with many selling under the 200c per kg mark.

SHEEP AND LAMBS:   Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Scott Miller and Liam Durcan.

304 sheep and lambs sold, 902 less than las week. Once again the small yarding restricted purchasers with only four buyers operating in a firm market. One exporter provided stability on the heavy lambs selling up to $176 for some 28 to 32kg lambs. One wholesaler was also strong competition on most pens from $126 to $159 for 20 to 22kg lambs. Light lambs from 14 to 18kg sold from $73 to $115.

2850 cattle yarded. The large yarding of mainly local drafts of vendor bred yearlings was intermixed with many northern cattle. Faced with the optimistic reality of the brake of the season coming soon purchasers were conservative.  Heavy steers 380-450kg made from $1180 to $1360. The tempo of the sale strengthened with multiple pens of locally bred cattle being offered, these well-bred lines hovered around the $1000 mark with weights of 300-350kg. It was very apparent once off the well-bred lines that the inferior type cattle sold $30 to $40 cheaper. So the magical line is possible 380kg equals $1000 only with a bit of help from the “agent”. An outstanding run of Shorthorn X Charolais Steers was presented by Patanga Pastoral Co, the annual seller drafted over 100 steers from $950 to $1230 with weights of 400-445kg. Others worth a mention was RK & SM Johnson 12 Her Strs 360kg $1000. The heifer run was equally challenging with all heifers returning 200c to 230c per kg or $600 to $810. A worthy mention was A/c Reg Edwards & Son 11 Her Heifers $810.
