Glenburnie Market Report 15/05/2019

Last week the district finally received its opening break with falls of 40 to over 50mm recorded. A fantastic and most welcome rain. The rain certainly had no immediate impact on Wednesdays market. The yarding of 943 was very plain, with only a handful of quality bullocks and yearlings coming forward. Secondary cattle look very buyable, but feed and hay are very scarce!

BULLS:  Sold at 9am.

A small yarding of bulls sold to firm demand leaving prices unchanged from the previous week with heavy sound bulls making from 200 -230c per kg.

Quotations: A/c PF & BA Burchard 1 Char Bull 230c 935kg $2150.50.

HEAVY STEERS & BULLOCKS:   Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Andrew Whan and Scott Miller

Generally a smaller very plain run of bullocks and steers with only isolated prime pens. The lack of quality made prices on paper look cheaper, but the steers were fully firm on last week. The best prime steers made 265-304c per kg. with plainer types 245-260c per kg. Feedlotters were active were weight suited their specifications. A few pens of Friesian steers were offered, and these realised 185-206c per kg.

Quotations: A/c D Barry Sim X Strs 276c 545kg $1504.00. A/c PF & BA Burchard Char X Ox 275c 716kg $1969.00 and Frs Strs 203-205c per kg $1284.00. A/c Roxley Park Ang X Strs 285c 530kg $1512.00.

YOUNG CATTLE:   Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Peter Creek and Liam Durcan

Quality was very hard to find, with plainer or cross bred types outnumbering prime trade cattle. The trade kept better types at rates fully firm on last week. The best yearling steers 270-304c per kg while the yearling heifers made 260-294c per kg. Again feedlots and restockers were active. The few vealers that were sold made 290-310c per kg.

Quotations:  A/c DJ & TA Fiebig heavy Frs Hfrs 196c 572kg $1122.00. Sim X Hfrs A/c D Barry 260c 503kg $1308.00. Ang Strs suitable for grain feeding A/c Majardah Rural 300c 486kg $1458.00. Ang X Hfrs A/c KJ & MJ Mountford topped at 292c 380kg $1109.00.

COWS:   Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Liam Durcan and Scott Miller.

A much smaller run of cows sold at stronger rates. The medium to heavy beef cows were 4-8c per kg dearer. The best beef cows 202-240c per kg. There are plainer cows coming through and these made 150-192c per kg.

Quotations:  A/c PF & BA Burchard Ang X Cows 227c 600kg $1362.00. A/c JL Lockwood Ang Cows 227c 573kg $1301.00 and lighter Ang Cows 162 456kg $739.00.

SHEEP AND LAMBS:   Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Scott Miller and Liam Durcan.

1407 sheep and lambs sold, 473 less than last market. A quality yarding of export lambs and heavy mutton, as usual medium trade lambs were at a premium because of short supply. Light store lambs fluctuated widely. While the buyers gallery wasn’t full, orders were strong and kept the market strong. Export lambs sold from $204 to $230 for 26 to 28kg, being firm to slightly cheaper. Heavy trades at 24 to 26kg sold to strong competition at $158 to $188. As rounded lambs dropped in weight they became scarce so 20 to 24kg lambs at $156 to $184 sold at dearer rates, being $4 to $5 dearer. Trade lambs 18 to 20kg sold at rates from $135 to $144. Wholesalers and back grounders sourced lambs from 16 to 18kg from $115 to $128. Expectedly heavy rounded XB Ewes sold at strong rates from $142 to $190 being $10 to $15 dearer.

Quotations:  A/c H Caldow heavy XB Ewes $142.

The opening rains of the season did not slow down the store cattle numbers as a much larger than advertised yarding of 2800 cattle came forward. The extra numbers did not affect demand, as extra buyers keen to secure large numbers competed strongly. To see heavy steers over 360kg fully firm to slightly dearer. Light and medium weaner steers $30 to $50 dearer, The biggest improver was the Angus heifers. The large run of heifers received strong competition to be $100 to $150 dearer. The Hereford heifers were fully firm to $20 dearer. Heavy Angus Steers over 360kg $1100 to $1350 or 290-320c per kg. Weaner steers $900 to $1100, light steers $700 to $860. Angus heifers 350kg + $900 to $1150 (250-278c per kg). Angus heifers 300-350kg $700 to $930 (265-280c per kg) and Hereford heifers $500 to $950.
