Glenburnie Market Report 30/01/2019

Numbers continued to fall, with 1174 offered this week (over 500 back on last week’s reduced yarding). Quality was mixed with some very good bullocks/heavy steers penned. Yearling heifers too were of good quality while trade steers and vealer quality was back on previous weeks. A similar sized cow yarding sold at firm rates.

BULLS:   Bulls sold at 9am.

Bulls sold to stronger demand lifting 8-10c per kg with heavy sound bulls making from 190- 228c per kg.

Quotations: A/c R. Aliberti Hfd Bull 210c 665kg $1396.50.

HEAVY STEERS & BULLOCKS:   Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Andrew Whan and Liam Durcan.

The bullock yarding was very mixed in quality, but the top end was very good. The heat and drying paddock feed has seen more cattle “slip” that would definitely be affecting weights and yields. The best heavy steers and bullocks sold firm at rates of 260-277c per kg with manufacturing types 228-250c per kg. A few Friesian Steers were offered and these realised 180-202c per kg.

Quotations: A/c PR & PL Walker Ang Steers 270c 554kg $1497.00. A/c Rocks Road Holdings Ang x Steers 272c 588kg $1601.00. A/c T. Smith Her x Ox $1721.00. Fresh bull cubs A/c M & S Thomson 212c 643kg $1363.00.

YOUNG CATTLE:   Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Peter Creek and Scott Miller.

More of the same each week now, with the gap widening between the top end, killable cattle and the balance. Good quality heavy and trade heifers met good competition to be at least fully firm to at times 4-6c per kg dearer. This would be due to their better fat coverage than steers. The best heavy heifers made 224-258c per kg. Trade heifers 235-262c per kg. The trade steers were mainly purchased by feedlots and restockers at rates of 245-270c per kg. The better vealers over 350kg made 250-280c per kg.

Quotations: The MWJ run consisted mainly of good quality heifers, with steers suitable for feedlots. A/c M & S Thomson fresh Ang Heifers 248c 597kg $1480.00 and 255c 510kg $1302.00. Prime Ang Lim x Heifers A/c DR & KA Sealey topped the MWJ run 258c 495kg $1279.00 while the steers realised 268c 501kg $1342.00. A Run of Her and Ang x Steers A/c Gwingana made 248-258c per kg.

COWS:   Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Liam Durcan and Scott Miller.

A smaller run of cows, but all classes were well represented to sell at rates firm on last week, The best med/heavy beef cows 185-208c per kg. Light beef cows sold to both processor and restocker competition 150-186c per kg. A few Frn cows this week sold at 170-184c per kg.

Quotations: Some outstanding Her Cows in the MWJ run this week A/c Peucker Farms and Reg Edwards & Son. The Peucker Farm cows 194c 832kg $1614.00 and 196c 729kg $1425.00. Reg Edwards & Son 194c 797kg $1547.00 and 196c 670kg $1313.00. A/c Killarnie Ang Cows 190c 630kg $1197.00 and light cows 170-177c selling to both processor and restocker competition.

SHEEP AND LAMBS:   Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Scott Miller and Liam Durcan.

1153 sheep sold, 505 less than last week. In a very mixed offering the yarding was met with stronger competition from the export end. The usual array of buyers made up the trade section. Healthy competition on shorn store lambs brought restockers to the fore. The extra export buyers added a bit of spike to the market, though quality and weight were scarce. Best export lambs 26-30kg $183 and 24-26kg were $168 to $171, all being fully firm to $1 to $2 dearer. Trade lambs 20-40kg were $140 to $160 with only small pens on offer. 18-20kg medium trade lambs were $118 to $140. The good mix of restocker and wholesalers saw 12-18kg lambs at $90 to $130.

Quotations:  A/c JG & RI Butler 9 lambs $156. A/c BW Kerr 11 lambs $155. A/c PC & SL Woolston 224 shorn lambs from $121 to $130. A/c S & S Oliver 7 wethers $130.
